Jun 29 – Whitecap Mountain and Beyond

June 29, 2011 by Beardoh

Started day with a climb up Whitecap Mtn. We were on the trail at 7:15am and were climbing pretty much immediately. Whitecap Mtn reportedly has views of Katahdin, but not for us today. We peaked 3 other mtns after Whitecap but in the same small range. Foggy everywhere. There is a popular side trail called the Gulf Hagas Trail but we didn’t bother as the visibility was so so short (sorry Jeff). Spent most of the day wet as we got rained on and were brushing up against branches full of water all day. Had a long lunch at a lean-to with our friend Alex, who we have seen or walked with everyday.

Early on in today’s walk we met a guy who had started the Content Divide Trail earlier this year, he had to bail because of record snow falls in Colorado…so he decided to do the AT. He had done the Pacific Crest Trail the year before. He was in very good shape from over a month on the CDT recently and was the first hiker to pass us on the trail this far.

There was an entertaining note that we found from a girl to her parents. She had a GPS beacon that was supposed to send a signal to an online service so her friends/family could track her progress. The beacon stopped working and her parents started to worry and drove up from Jersey to look for her. In her note she told her parents to stop freaking out.

Met a French couple today. They are from Paris. Beardoh didn’t remember any of his high school French except ‘je ne parle francais pas’. Their English was just as poor. Thankfully they just need to follow the white blazes that mark the trail and they will be fine.

In a trail register at a lean-to, someone else wrote about being chased by a grouse. His flew after him and did chase him down the trail a bit. Craziness.

Ended day with a steep climb to a pond where we are camping by ourselves for the first time.

All is good but Sweetpea’s feet hurt.
