Got a good start to the day and had made 17 miles by 12:30 with breaks. Trail was quite conducive to moving quick and the mosquitos were pretty aggressive so it made sense to keep it moving quickly.
I finally saw a bear this morning. It was jogging across the trail when I saw him. He was big. Bigger/taller than black bears that I have seen on the East Coast or in the Midwest. His color was a blondish/cinnamon color, similar to grizzlies that I have seen in Alaska, but only the black bear species are in this area. On a side note, the bear cub that Qball had saw last week was similar in color.
Had lunch at some picnic benches at a trailhead, where we got some relief from the mosquitoes. There were quite a few day hikers headed out from this area, and this continues the trend of seeing so many day hikers in the Tahoe are.
Had beautiful walking in the afternoon. We were on a long ridge near a ski resort and could see on both sides of the ridge for few miles as well as Lake Tahoe. The PCT actually coincides with another trail, the Tahoe Rim Trail. The TRT would be definitely worth doing in the future. This area is so beautiful and fairly accessible from a major airport.
Tonight we are camped with a woman named Steady who has hiked the trail in 2003 as well. She is the third Triple Crowner that we have met on the trail (triple crowner is someone who has hiked all of the AT, PCT and CDT).
