Sep 29 – Washington

September 29, 2011 by Beardoh

Good nights sleep for both of us hammocking under the porch roof of the shelter last night. Doing the same again tonight.

Started off the day hiking separately. Beardo was going into town to get the resupply and since it was going to be a fairly long day with just the hiking, he did it alone and Sweet Pea kept hiking on the trail. Beardo got a hitch from David, a guy who lives near the trail. He took Beardo into the grocery store, then picked him up and brought him back to the trail when he was done shopping….what luck!

With Beardo’s quick pace and thinking he was going to be chasing Sweet Pea all day, he actually ended up in front of her on the trail, and she caught up to him when he was finishing up lunch….we were both surprised.

Weather alternated between drizzle and blue skies. Day ended nice…was fairly cool today and chilly tonight as we settle into sleep.

Crossed over a big freeway in the afternoon ..we stood above on the walking bridge and got people to honk and wave. Not sure why, but that is always pretty fun. We do the thing where you move your arm up and down as when we were kids to get the truckers to honk. It’s silly, but pretty fun.

Walked by the Washington Memorial which is built out of stones from a mountain slide. In the parking lot, we met a couple with their grandkids who didn’t know about the AT and were pretty shocked that we had walked here from Maine. They gave us some apple sauce and candy corn….yum!

Also walked by some Civil War battle monuments. One of the sites was where a regiment from Michigan came and fought. Apparently, Maryland has a few Civil War sites along the trail so we may see more tomorrow.

Shelter tonight is another outstanding one by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Really a beautiful construction. and nice site. There are 13 people here tonight. Purple and Carnivore are with us as well as a southbounder that we just met named Wrongway. There are 10 section hikers here tonight. Haven’t stayed at a site with so many in a very long time.

Daily Distance: 20.6
