TRT 3: Tahoe City

September 4, 2018 by Beardoh

Daily Miles: 17

Total Miles: 51

We decided to get up a half hour early today since we would be spending time in Tahoe City. We all seemed to already be awake before our alarms went off, so it wasn’t a problem.

We only had six miles into Tahoe City and we all had breakfast on our minds. Once we made it into town, we headed straight for a cafe near the trailhead and enjoyed a breakfast of burritos, baked goods and coffee. It really hit the spot and we were even able to charge all of our devices while we ate.

We hung out at the cafe for awhile and then headed across the street to the supermarket. It seems there is a new grocery store in town since we hiked the trail in 2014 and luckily it is right near the trail (the other grocery store is on the other end of town). It definitely saved us some time and energy since we were able to keep our town tasks clustered near the trail.

We picked up five days of food for our next stretch to Stateline. Whenever we buy food on trail, it always weighs so much more than the food we prepare ourselves for a hike. The food is certainly more exciting (cheese, salami, tortillas), but it makes a five day food carry really heavy.

We were all complaining about the weight of our packs as we headed back on to the trail around 1:00pm. It was quite warm today and the bulk of the miles in the afternoon were uphill, which made us all tired since we were carrying so much food.

Today was MountainMan’s birthday and we all carried out some treat for him to enjoy. SweetPea carried a bag of Cheetos, which we polished off during our first break. Beardoh carried a can of beer for MountainMan to have with dinner, and Ace carried a piece of German chocolate cake (with a candle) for dessert. Tomorrow is Mtn Man and Ace’s 8th wedding anniversary.

Even with our 3 1/2 hour stop in Tahoe City, we were still able to get our miles done by 6:40pm. We were all tired and really sweaty from a big climb at the end. We set up our hammocks and then got our dinners cooking while we cleaned our legs and feet. It was completely dark out by the time we were finishing dinner. Definitely our latest day, but it was a fun day.
