Got an early start to the day and were up just as it was getting light. Beardoh headed into Hanover early to make sure that we met up with our friend, Wilbur, who was bringing a replacement backpack for Sweet Pea. We were all in Hanover by 10am, which was good to have 10 miles in by that time.
Wilbur met us at the food co-op with the new pack as we had hoped. He also brought us a stellar sandwich, some pastries, and probably the best brownie in the world. Thanks Wilbur! In front of the co-op, we met a northbound thru-hiker named Cimmaron. We had followed a bit of his progress in the spring. He is 89 years old and if he completes his thru-hike, he will be the oldest person to have ever thru-hiked the AT. The pic is of Beardo with Cimmaron.
While in Hanover, we feasted. The pizza place gives a free slice to thru-hikers. Beardo and Cueball each got two extras, Sweet Pea one extra….and a bunch of sodas. One of the outfitter gives a free Snickers bar and the bagel shop gives a bagel with loads of cream cheese and two extra bagels for the road. It was Swag city. We left fat, happy, slow and only mostly motivated.
Rain was forecasted so it made sense to get rolling at a reasonable time to at least get a few miles in on the trail and get our hammock rigs set up before the rain if we could….which we did and it is pouring outside the tarp as this is written.
