Superior Hiking Trail – Day 6

August 31, 2023 by Beardoh and SweetPea

Daily Miles: 12

Total Miles: 95

It was a cool morning, but we were warmed up quickly with a steep climb to start the day.  Most of the rest of the hiking today was pretty good trail, which helped us keep a faster pace as we were headed into town.

We met a section hiker along the trail who was happy to chat about his trip and his gear.  We checked out his backpack, which is a new brand in the past few years (Durston).  We swapped a few trail stories and then continued on our separate ways.

SweetPea took a good tumble today.  She must have tripped on a root and landed squarely on both of her knees.  Luckily she wasn’t hurt…just a little dirty.

We didn’t stop for a lunch break today, so we were able to get to our road crossing (for access into our next trail town, Tofte) by 1pm.  It was a gravel road, and we saw three cars within ten minutes while trying to hitch 3 miles into town.  All of the cars stopped for us, which was amazing!

The first car only had room for one person, so we declined.  We are ok to separate in pairs, but we didn’t like the idea of just one person breaking off.  We waited just a few minutes for the second car who had room for two people.  Qball and JJ got in the car and before they even drove off, another car came by and picked us up.  Both cars dropped us off at a cafe in Tofte a few short minutes later.  We couldn’t believe our great luck with hitches so far.

We decided to do our grocery shopping before getting lunch at the cafe.  We were just picking up a few additions since our resupply box was waiting for us at a local outfitter.

Our lunch at the cafe was really good.  It was nice to just sit and relax with good food.  After lunch we picked up our resupply box and then we walked to the hotel where we had reservations.

The hotel had a pool, hot tub and sauna, so after showers and laundry we spent the evening rotating between the three.

In the hotel, we met a guy, Scout, who had just finished an 8 day section hike.  We hung out with him during the evening, and since he had his car there, he offered to bring us back to the trail tomorrow.

It felt like a full day and we didn’t get to bed before 9pm.  It was a great break in town and hopefully we will all feel refreshed tomorrow morning.
