Daily Miles: 4
Total Miles: 204
We got up at 6:30am this morning even though we didn’t have many miles to walk. Everyone was anxious to get into town.
We backtracked just over a mile to avoid the closed trail further south. Once we finished backtracking, we started to walk the reroute which was all on roads. The first mile or so was on a nice gravel road and then we turned onto a paved road. It was pretty quiet on the road except for a gun range we walked by (someone was out for an early morning target practice session) and a couple county workers mowing the grass on the side of the road.
We ended up just road walking to a place where we could hitch into town. It took twenty minutes, but we got a ride from a local guy. He is actually one of the landowners who allows the SHT to cross his land.
He dropped us off at a local diner where we got a nice breakfast. Then we started our town tasks, which included walking to the office of the Superior Hiking Trail Association. We had sent a resupply box to their office, plus we all wanted to get a sticker for the trail.
When we got to the office, there was another hiker there who said she had met us in the trail. Once she described where we had met, we totally recognized her. It is funny how different one can look on the trail, versus how they look with a shower and normal street clothes. The office worker took our photo and then the other hiker, Becka, gave us a ride to McDonalds where we hung out until we could go to the motel.
We are staying at an AmericInn again. So we got to spend the afternoon enjoying the spa, pool and sauna. It felt so good to shower and do laundry…especially after the last six days where we had a combination of ultra hot and humid days where we sweat profusely and yesterday where we walked in the rain and mud.
