One of the great days on the trail. Woke up and got going in the dark, but before long we had sun and blue skies….what a delight. Feels like we have been waiting for a nice clear day for so long.
Had great views several times today. We passed over the highest point in the Shenandoah Park on the AT. Lots of ledge cliffs to see down into the valleys below, the mountains we have already crossed and the terrain yet to come.
Ran into two hikers that we hadn’t seen since Maine: DA and Sundowner. Crossed paths with several other southbounders as well today. At the shelter tonight there are 5 thru-hikers, one section hiker who had thru-hiked in 2000, and a couple cyclists who are riding through the park.
Saw several deer on the trail today, some that were very close (within 15 yards) before they would move. Also saw a bear near the spring at the shelter.
Passed by a restaurant and went in for lunch. That is one great thing about this park, walking past a wayside or restaurant. Had reubens, a couple beers, dessert….a good treat.
