Great walking through the Tahoe area ski resorts for the morning. Spent a good deal of time on beautiful ridges with 360 degree views.
At one of the trail junctions up on a ridge, we met some world class ultra runners. Jim Howard and Bill Finkbinder (sp?). Jim has one the Western States twice as well as Leadville. These races are 100 miles long and considered among the toughest endurance races. Qball, as an ultramarathon runner himself, was pretty jazzed to meet these legends of the sport. I was as well.
At about the 15 mile point we were at Donner Pass. From here he hitched down to Soda Springs and bought some food for resupply at the store. It was only a mediocre resupply…not a whole lot for dinner options unless you wanted to cook mash potatoes. They did have pints of sherbert, which was a nice treat on a hot afternoon.
Got a hitch back up to the pass easy enough and walked another ten miles before stopping at 8:15.
Saw Pineapple Express and Steady on the Trail and that was it for thruhikers. There were a lot of day hikers and trailrunners on the trails today.
