Very early start for our race to the post office in Sierra City. Lots of miles to cover (32) and the PO closes at 4:30. With the early start, we were walking in the dark at the beginning. That was really nice to be awake as the sun was coming up.
The day became warm fast enough. One of the hotter days that we have walked in some time. Especially once we were getting down to Sierra City. We were down to nearly 4000′ elevation at the edge of town.
Met some volunteers who were working on the trail. They had a 6′ double handled saw, like old time lumber cutters…not sure why they do not use chain saws, but the hand saws do seem to be the norm.
Also met PCT legend Billy Goat. He has logged over 25,000 miles on the PCT in the last ten years. He is a pretty amazing person, and probably one of the best known folks on the trail.
Got into Sierra City in the early afternoon and grabbed a burger from the country store….picked up my resupply at the post office and had a nice surprise from my cousin Jill and her family. A great care package full of all the sweets that I was craving, and some socks! How did you guys know that I was just starting to get wholly socks yesterday? Thanks Marcus, Lucas, Paul and Jill! I very much enjoyed the goodies, and I even shared some too 🙂
The good fortune kept coming…Sierra City has a couple trail angels who run the the Red Moose Inn and restaurant. The owners are kind enough to let us camp in the back yard, shower and do laundry. They had a great rib dinner tonight as well. Lots of hikers enjoying a bit of rest here.
