Aug 7 – Rosary Lake

August 7, 2012 by Beardoh

Wet morning waking up. Most everything soaked from the dew. Should have hung my hammock under trees with more overhang, but sometimes that is not possible.

Got a late start…no alarms this am and let some of our gear get a start on drying out. We were on an alternate trail to the normal PCT, one that has more lakes and water. Unfortunately, there were several other trails and some roads all connecting in the area and Qball and I got on the wrong one. Using the GPS on the phone to find where we were and then take a bearing we were able GPS bushwack to the trail that we wanted without having to backtrack. Along the way, I got stung by a bee.

We had a fairly flat 11 miles into Shelter Cove Campground where we were picking up resupply packages. As we were approaching the campground, we came upon a sign for trail magic at one of the campsite in the campground. Just when you think that there won’t be anymore magic…..

Roadrunner had hiked the trail in 2009, and he and his wife had their camper set up and were serving hamburgers, corn on the cob, soda and a bunch of other goodies to hikers at their campsite. Was great to meet them and hang out with all our friends there. There were a lot of hikers there…. Pretty much everyone that we have seen in the last 3 days, plus Bono Jim, who we had not seen since Burney Falls.

After spending several hours at the trail magic eating, drying out gear and charging the phone back up, we headed out around 5. Walked another 6 miles and then setup camp near Rosary Lake with Udi, and later Malarky showed up.

Udi had a fire going and since I now have my cookpot, I had a Knorr Rice Side that I had picked up in the hiker box. I am having one hot meal for dinner every 3-4 days now. Usually someone leaves a Ramen or Knorr Side in the hiker boxes, so it is an easy and cheap add on for a salt craving.

Weather was hot today, in the 90s. Hoping that it is a bit cooler tomorrow as we shoot for 30 miles.
