Sep 7 – Rain. Rain Heavy at Times

September 7, 2011 by Beardoh

Rain. Rain Heavy at times. …. This is what the NOAA website has been saying for days now. Last night it rained hard again.

Had only a 5 mile walk into Vernon, NJ today. Thought it would be good to do a short walk and give Beardo’s shin and Sweet Pea’s hip a lighter day, as we were both feeling a little more pain than previous days.

We got about 3 miles down the trail and came to a newly washed out footbridge. It seems that each day’s heavy rains are still raising the waters since the hurricane. Water on the trail and in the streams is higher now than it was a week ago. We couldn’t make it over this stream as it was just too high and fast to ford and the banks too steep all around to find a place to rock hop. We had passed a road a mile back, so we walked back to that road and figured out which way we needed to go to get into town. We ended up walking a long ways on the blacktop to an intersection, and then got a hitch into Vernon to the hostel at the church. In then end, we probably did more miles than had we been able to walk on the trail, but just not as pleasant as walking in the woods.

Beardo also found some poison ivy on his arm. Qball, if you are reading this…we think you transmitted poison ivy via your last text to us!

The church hostel in Vernon is nice. There is a computer, TV, shower and laundry..even a couple cots for us to sleep on. We also met a German couple here that are fun to hang out with.

Daily Distance: 5
Trip Distance: 830.7
