PCT 88 – Soda Mountain Wilderness

August 11, 2016 by Beardoh and SweetPea

Daily miles – 16
Total miles – 1729

Great night of sleep for both of us at Callahans last night.   Comfortable bed,  quite room,  all good. We got up late and had the breakfast right there in the lodge.   It was good and we were happy to make up for the poor showing at dinner the previous night.

We decided to hang out at the lodge for a few more hours after breakfast so Mountain Man could set up some future resupply shipments.   He has been using Zero Day Resupply,  where he can go on their website,  choose food and they ship it out to a specific place on the trail. While he did that,  we sat in the Jacuzzi that was in our suite and then Beardoh took a nap while SweetPea read.

We got up to the trail around 1pm, and arrived right when another hiker ( Uncle Tammy) and his girlfriend were getting dropped off by his parents.  They offered us some peaches and we really enjoyed them.   Perfectly ripe and juicy!

Hiking was pretty much up and down rolling trail along a ridge line.   Not particularly easy or hard.   Temps were nice for walking.  Had good views of Mt Shasta to the south and dry hills in most other directions.

We didn’t see too many thru hikers today.   One of the quieter days that we have had on the trail in that regard.  We talked a bit with Mama Lion and Boone,  a mother and son who are thru hiking.   He is 9 years old and the youngest hiker we have met.  We did see several day hikers and some folks on horseback. Probably more day users today than PCT hikers.

The thimble berries are much more ripe on this side of I-5 and we enjoyed quite a few this afternoon.   We love berries and are excited for more thimble berries, blackberries and blueberries to come.
