PCT 63 – Pass Creek

July 13, 2016 by Beardoh and SweetPea

Daily Miles: 21
Total Miles: 1185

Thankfully the mosquitos were nowhere to be found when we woke up this morning. We figured that perhaps it was too cold for them with the chilly morning. In any case, it was nice to be able to pack up without worrying about mosquitos attacking us.

Once we started walking, and it started to warm up, the mosquitos came out. MountainMan got a picture with around fifty mosquitos just on his calf. Luckily, as we walked they weren’t too bad.

The trail was quite nice and cushy today. Again we walked through many fields of purple and yellow wild flowers. We had several gradual ups and downs, and now we are in the middle of a very long down hill slope into Sierra City (which we will get to tomorrow).

There were quite a few hikers on the trail today. Some we have seen in passing before, but quite a few are new to us. Even though this situation has been happening since the beginning of the trail, we are surprised that it is still happening. It seems like the amount of hikers continues to be high, and we are continuing to see new people everyday.

Today we had a seven mile stretch without water. That seems like such a short stretch after hiking in the desert, but it reminds us that we need to continue to be aware of the water availability. We just drank 3/4 of a liter at the stream and then carried the same amount out. That was plenty to get the seven miles. It was just good that we knew to get water at that stream instead of assuming we could get water a bit further down the trail.

We got into camp around 6:00. It was nice to be able to leisurely set up our hammocks. Our hang spots have a lot of dead branches underneath the hammock. We cleared out a bunch of brush, but it is still annoying to have branches all over the ground.

We are going to try to head out a bit earlier tomorrow. We want to make sure that we make it into Sierra City for lunch. We haven’t decided yet if we will sleep in town, or just head back to the trail in the afternoon. We’ll wait and make our decision once we’re there.
