PCT 45 – Vermillion Valley Resort

June 22, 2016 by Beardoh and SweetPea

Daily Miles: 5.5 (4 PCT Miles)
Total Miles: 879

Last night ended up being quite a bit colder than expected, but we both still slept really good.  Luckily the mosquitos were still mostly sleeping as we packed up, so they weren’t too much of a bother.

We headed out at our usual leaving time of 6:00ish.  Even though we were only doing a few miles today, we needed to make sure we finished the miles by 9:45am, because we were going to be taking a ferry to Vermillion Valley Resort (VVR) for our day of rest and resupply.

The first mile or so of trail was really flat and nice…not the rocky trail we’ve encountered lately. Then the trail headed down pretty quickly.  It didn’t feel so bad, because we were going downhill and there were a lot of switchbacks to smooth out the quick descent.  We remembered going up this section of trail when we hiked the JMT and thinking that it was an endless steep climb.

We made it down to the ferry landing about an hour before the scheduled pickup.  Luckily, there was an unscheduled boat just dropping off people from VVR that was heading back, so we were able to get in an hour earlier than we had planned.

The lake was really still this morning and we had a good boat ride to the resort.  We made it in time to have breakfast at the restaurant.  We were really glad about that, because we were starved.

We set up our hammocks in a free camping section. It is in a nice section with a lot of trees, so it is nice and shaded.  We spent the afternoon reading, napping and sorting through our resupply box.

We ate lunch in the restaurant in addition to chips, candy bars and ice cream from the camp store.  We have both been feeling extra hungry on the trail lately and have wished that we had extra food with us.  Since we didn’t, we are making up for it by eating lots of food when we are at resupply points.

It has been great to rest for most of the day today. These last five days of trail have been really challenging and our bodies need to recover.
