Last night had some unexpected fun (after writing the journal). The boy scout leaders nearby offered us some marshmallows which was a nice treat. Then just before Beardoh was about to head to bed, a guy who was camping up the hill from us came down an asked if we wanted some grilled food. Beardoh, Mountain Man and XC headed up and had hot dogs, sausages, Doritos and soda. Great way to end the day.
Today had a significant amount of road walking because of the endangered species detour. Although it was a Sunday, the traffic on the road was not too bad. Today was the first day that we were walking with Mountain Man, XC, Gazelle and Proton for the whole day, so it was nice to chat with them and learn more about their lives.
The day was largely a gradual downhill walk in very pleasant temperature. It was nice to not have a significant uphill as we did coming from Cajon Pass or the climb up Baden Powell. An easy day of walking with an early stop for the day (before 4). In the. Late morning, we crossed the 400 mile mark!
In the afternoon there was a decent amount of Poodle Dog Bush near the trail. This bush can be very large (over 6 feet tall) quite expansive. It has resins that cause a skin rash similar or worse than poison oak or ivy on most people. We have been keeping out eyes open for it and not touching anything that looks like the photos we have seen of it.
We are camped at a little campground where there are some fire pits and picnic tables. After dinner Mountain Man started a fire and we all gathered wood enough for a couple hours. Other hikers came over for the fire and hung out for a bit – Roel (Holland), Ken (England), Stephan (Germany) and Chilly Cheese (Chicago).
Both of us found good trees to hang from tonight. The Temps are not as cold as last night, and the air is very still. Looking forward to a good night of sleep as we will probably hike 20 or more miles tomorrow.
