PCT 112 – Mt Adams Wilderness

September 5, 2016 by Beardoh and SweetPea

Daily miles – 24
Total miles – 2251

Rain,  hail,  burgers and mountain views made it the day today.   One of those things were expected.

Our morning started cool with a climb.   It felt like we kept finding ourselves in cold patches,  and layers were being put on,  and then coming off more times than we could count.   Views of Mt Adams came into sight mid morning.   We had walked very easterly into a burned area that was visible from the road to Trout Lake yesterday.   As we certainly around the western edge a bit later,  we had views of hiking the Rainier,  and St Helen’s.

Those views in the AM were the best that we would have.   The weather turned quickly in the late morning and it started to hail.  Small little pellets,  nothing dangerous.   And then,  the rain came.  Small hail is better,  we decided – one doesn’t get nearly as wet. It never poured on us,  but it was enough.

As the day continued on,  things started to brighten both figuratively and literally.   The sun started to show itself here and there,  we started to dry out,  huckleberry became more abundant and we heard about some trail magic at mile 2250.

We made it to the trail magic at 6:30 and enjoyed baked potatoes,  soda,  hot chocolate,  and burgers.   It was a family of three that were parked on a jeep road preparing all this food for hikers.   At the magic,  we met some hikers that were new to us as well.

We hiked out about a mile beyond the trail magic stop and are camped just in from a meadow.   We strung up one tarp to cover us both to try to cut down on the condensation on our hammocks and sleeping bags.
