PCT 101 – Olalie Lake

August 25, 2016 by Beardoh and SweetPea

Daily Miles: 26
Total Miles: 2043

Today was the first time that SweetPea wasn’t the first one awake. In fact, Beardoh had to wake her up. Since we got up late, Beardoh helped SweetPea pack up her stuff while she did her morning stretches and rolled out her hip. We both enjoyed the beautiful sunrise colors as we got ready for the day.

The day started with a very gradual downhill slope to a stream cutting through a valley. We have noticed that some of the streams in this area are fed by glaciers and therefore can be a bit silty. The water will look a little milky and the silt can clog water filters.

During the day, we saw only a few thru hikers. We actually saw quite a few backpackers out for just a few days. While we were sitting eating lunch, we couldn’t believe the number of backpackers that passed by our lunch spot. It seems like Mount Jefferson is quite a draw, and for good reason. We seemed to walk around it over the course of the day, and we continued to get spectacular views.

As we hiked during the day, we had a goal in our minds of getting to the Ollalie Lake Resort store before it closed at 8:00. We knew they had snacks and we were all looking forward to a cold drink. We have all been really hungry lately and we’ve been eating more than our daily allotment of snacks on this stretch. So, we needed to buy more food to replace the extra food we’ve eaten. Even buying the extra food, we will definitely finish this section with no extra food…we will have no problem eating everything we have with us.

We made it to the store by 7:15 and got some chips and salsa which we enjoyed at the picnic table by the store. We had a nice time chatting and relaxing after a tiring day.

By the time we headed to the campsites near the store, it was starting to get dark. All the real sites were already taken, so we just wedged ourselves into the small space that was still open. It will be nice to have a privy to use tomorrow morning!
