Daily miles – 25
Total Miles – 2017
Cold, cold morning waking up today. It was unexpectedly cool and damp overnight and we were all a little taken off guard and under dressed for sleeping last night.
We continued our walk through the burn area for several miles today. Once we entered the Jefferson Wilderness on the north side of Santiam Pass, we began climbing and getting some good views again. Three Fingered Jack and Mt Jefferson were in view at various times today as we walked the ridge between the two.
In the AM, we crossed the 2000 mile mark of the trail. One of the big mile stones of the trail for sure. Just 650 miles left to go. It does already feel as though we are truly on the tail end of the journey which is almost silly as we still have all of Washington to hike through. I guess our sense of how quickly 500 miles of hiking can go by makes us feel the end all the more.
We saw several south bound hikers and 5 North bound hikers today’s, a few day hikers in the morning and even a few short distance backpackers out. This area is very accessible for people from Bend, Sisters, and other nearby towns.
Tonight we are camped on a ridge just below Mt Jefferson with great views from the tent spot where Gazelle and Mountain Man have their tents. We were not able to hang our hammocks in the tent spot as there wasn’t much for trees right there. We did have our dinner with them, and enjoyed the great views then. Tomorrow am will have some nice views as Mt Jefferson gets lit up from the east, with hopefully nice colors.
