Slept in a little bit and didn’t get on the trail till 6:45. Today was some of the easiest walking that we have had. No major uphills or downhills, nearly all flat walking through the woods. Sometimes the trail was as sandy as a beach, which is difficult to walk with any speed in, but generally the day was easy walking.
Had some good views of Mt Lassen while walking through a section of forest that had burnt. Always lots of blowdowns in the burnt areas as the trees get weakend from the fire.
We arrived in Old Station around 2:30. There is not much to the town. Some national park campgrounds and a couple small convenience stores. We got some lunch at one and hung out at their picnic tables chatting with hikers for the afternoon.
Tonight we are camped by the Subway Cave, which is a 1/3 mile long cave that is pretty neat. It is surprisingly big inside, both wide and tall. There is about 14 of us here camping. We will be getting an early start (before 5am) to help us get some miles in before it gets to warm. We have a 30 mile stretch without water tomorrow…and are told that it is quite sun exposed.
