MRT 17 – April 29 – Show Low

Daily Miles: 19

Total Miles: 287

Happy Birthday to Beardoh!

It was chilly again when we started out. We seem to keep getting faster at packing up and we were on the trail by 6:10am.

The trails today continued to be well-marked and well-constructed, as part of the White Mountain Trail System. The trail could be quite rocky at times, which really exasperated the blisters/hot spots we have on our heels. There doesn’t seem to be any avoiding rocks when hiking in AZ…we just have to grin and bear it.

The weather was perfect for hiking today…cool and windy. There were multiple times during the day when it felt like it was going to rain, but then the grey clouds would be blown away as quickly as they had been blown in. Instead, we had a very comfortable day of hiking.

Our only water sources today were earthen cow tanks. Both tanks we got water from were by far the darkest brown water we have collected…it really put our Sawyer filters to the test.

Once again, the lure of town sped up our pace during the day. We didn’t take too long of breaks and we were able to keep a fast pace while walking, so we made it into town around 3:30pm, which was earlier than we expected.

We walked through some residential areas of Show Low (including an area with multiple new, huge homes being built), and came out on a major business road. We walked down the main road a short ways to Walmart where we picked up a few things and then ate an early dinner at McDonalds.

We had originally planned for five days from Forest Lakes Estates to Show Low, but with the easier walking, we were able to do it in four days. As a treat for ourselves, we are taking a rest day in town tomorrow. Our feet will be very happy to have the respite from walking on rocks.
