Hit the 500 mile mark today!
Got a late start, as we waited for the complimentary breakfast at the Inn which was not served till 7:30. It was worth waiting for. Considering the price of the cheap room, it was really quite good.
We rolled out around 8:30 from the Inn and got a bit sidetracked when a beagle started following us down the highway to where the AT crosses the road. We brought him back to the Inn and called the owner.
Had a pretty long climb up Killington on a very nice trail. Took lunch at the shelter near the summit and ran into two Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who just got back from Samoa. They had completed their service in December and decided to hike the AT northbound. It was fun swapping stories about our experiences.
We caught up to a southbounder named Lucky who has done many parts of the AT multiple times. Last time we had seen him was in the hundred mile wilderness.
The day ended with a long downhill to the Clarendon Shelter. It has a little meadow in front of it and someone planted flowers….kinda strange….but nice.
No Cueball camping with us tonight. He got a headstart on us by 2-3 hours today and we know he is trying to meet some friends in MA, so he needs to hustle. We hope to meet up with him in southern Massachusetts or Connecticut.
In our hammocks by 7pm. Tomorrow we may do 23 miles. Depends how we feel and if we get sidetracked by a breakfast place that is 1/2 mile off the trail.
