Aug 18 – Into South Mowich River

August 18, 2014 by Beardoh

It was really nice this morning to be able to get back in our hammocks for awhile after getting up to go to the bathroom.  Sweetpea finally got up at about 6:50 and did some trigger point stuff and then started packing up.  Beardoh got up and we had breakfast before Qball was awake.  With the more casual pace that we are doing on this walk, we can get rolling a good bit later than a typical thru-hike.  From the folks we have been talking to, it seems that many are taking 10ish days to hike this trail.  John, who we were camped with last night is taking two weeks. Another group we ran into today were only hiking 5 miles.

We finally got on the trail around 8:15 and could see right away the Carbon Glacier that was near our camp.  We hiked down and then came to a suspension bridge.  This one was pretty solid and quite long.  Suspension bridges are always pretty fun to go across since we don’t encounter them too often and only one person crosses at a time, so it is fun to watch other people cross.  After the bridge, we got off the WT and took an alternate route which would take us over Sprayed Park.  We had a very long uphill climb and even came across some blueberries and salmon berries.  That was the first time Sweetpea had eaten salmon berries and they were quite tasty.

As we got closer to the park, we started seeing more day hikers.  The park was beautiful with lots of wild flowers.  There were quite a few day hikers in this area.  Once we got to the park, it was pretty much all downhill to our campsite at South Mowich River.  On the way down, Qball spotted a couple bears on the mountainside white far away.  There happened to be a guy nearby with binoculars so we could confirm it.  One of the bears was quite large.

We got to camp just after 5:30 and got set up.  We are hanging in an area which is not a designated tent site, but by the time we arrived, there was only the group site (with no trees) and the shelter still available.  We all washed up at the river and even ate dinner down there since the bugs are bad at the camp.  We hung out talking for a bit and then all headed to bed around 8:00.  We are ready for another long night’s sleep.

Daily Miles: 13.0 miles
Total Miles: 27.4 miles
