Got up as shortly after waking up since the toilet was a quarter of a mile away and our toilet paper was hanging from the bear pole. We managed to pack up quickly and get on the trail by 7:00.
There was a heavy fog around our campsite and in the valley along the river. As we hiked up, we got above the fog and could see it settled in the low areas. For a short time in the morning, it looked like the day would turn to blue skies, but unfortunately the clouds won and it was a pretty overcast and chilly day. We would get cold every time we stopped for a break and would put on a jacket.
We stopped into the South Puyallup River campsite in the morning to see the rock formations which are similar to the Devil’s Podt Pile near Mammoth. These were really cool and you could get quite close to them…strange that they are not named or signed at all. We went over another suspension bridge right after lunch. This bridge was easily the longest suspension bridge we have ever been on. It was pretty fun as usual.
We arrived at Pyramid Creek, which was to be our campsite around 4:30 and Qball continued on to Longmire. It has been great hiking with Qball these past four days, so it was sad to see him go. When we walked into camp, there was only one site left and there were no trees to hang from, so we are a bit in the woods. We talked for quite awhile with both other parties here…one group of guys was very interested in our ultralight gear and another couple talked with us more about hiking. It was nice to finally see some friendly folks in the campsite, as I have been surprised that people have not been more social. We are not getting into our hammocks until it is almost dark because of the socializing.
We’re planning to get an early start and then we’ll see if Longmire will allow us to change our campsite for tomorrow.
