Beardoh wasn’t feeling too good today, so it was a bit of a late start and we got on the trail around 8:20. Even with the late start, we were still the first group to leave camp today.
We crossed the South Mowich River right away and thankfully all the bridges were in place, so the crossing was relatively easy. After the river, we had a very long series of switchbacks uphill. At the top, we came across some bushes with ripe blueberries and huckleberries (another berry first for Sweetpea). As we continued down the trail, there was a seemingly endless field of berry bushes. We took our time going through the bushes and ate a ton of mostly huckleberries, as the blueberries were quite tart.
We had lunch at Golden Lakes which was quite relaxing and pretty. We ended up hanging out at the lake for over an hour. In the afternoon, the temperature seemed to cool a bit and the trail was a gentle downhill.
Our camping spot is pretty good tonight at North Puyallup River, except that the toilet is about a quarter if a mile away at the group site. There is a really beautiful place there where we had dinner tonight…great views of some mountains, the river, a glacier, and a bunch of waterfalls. We finally saw our first ranger tonight at dinner. We think he came and checked our permit on Sweetpea’s backpack.
We’re going to aim for an earlier start time tomorrow. If Beardoh isn’t feeling well, we may get off the trail with Qball tomorrow, which would mean a 17 mile day.
Daily Miles: 11.8 miles
Total Miles: 39.2 miles
