Early rise as we had a 30 mile waterless stretch. The morning was quite chilly and I wore my long johns shirt for a couple hours. We were hiking by 4:45.
The day was largely spent walking on the top edge of a valley, so we had nice views of the valley itself for much of the day as well as views of Mt Lassen and Mt Shasta in the morning.
We had one of the coolest days on the trail thus far for what would typically have been a dry and hot section. Temps were in the 60s for most of the day, and we were walking through a fire damaged section that was exposed to the sun most of the time . The cold front that came through was timed perfectly with today’s walk. There ended up being a water cache after 15 miles, but we didn’t want to risk it being empty so we brought enough water for the whole 30 miles.
Ended the day at a fish hatchery down in the valley. Had dinner on the picnic benches there, and also checked out the trout in the pools.
Stealth camped a couple miles from the hatchery.
