Temps got into the low 40s, possibly upper 30s last night. It was chilly, but I slept well. In the middle of the night, there was a pretty odd noise very close to where we were camped. I could hear Qball whispering to Wolfpack asking what he though it was. Wolfpack didn’t wake up but I could hear JJ say that it was just a bird and a then a minute later, that it was a teradactyl. I think it was a coyote.
Hike today was good. Went through several different landscapes. Regular forest, ridge walking, forest fire burned area. Got decent views of mountains. Not a lot of water on the walk, which I felt. I was pretty thirsty for a stretch and regretted not picking up more water when I had the chance. This mindset was initiated yesterday when the guidebook had a section marked without water, and then there were seven solid sources for water. It wasn’t a big deal, but I walked thirsty for a few miles.
We had heard there would be trail magic at Harts Pass, and there was. We had planned our day to end right here at the pass, and came upon Serpent Slayer cooking up burgers and sausages this evening. Also had soda, salad, potato salad, wine, beer, whiskey, cookies, fruit, nuts, crackers, cheese and other goodies…really great way to end the day. I believe there will be a hot breakfast here in the am. Tonight sitting around the campfire had good talks with folks about the Continental Divide Trail, the Camino de Santiago as well as cross country biking. Fun to hang out with folks that take on these big adventures.
At the trail magic and camping here are the four of us, Calf, Derek, Blairswitch, Trailbait, Meander, Croation Sensation, Not a Chance, and Old Drum. Croation and Not a Chance actually finished the trail yesterday, but rather than go into Canada, they came back to Harts Pass to get a ride back home from there.
