Great weather today! Got a 7am start out of the RPH shelter area and had a couple nice views early on in the day. Passed within a half mile of a concession stand that had ice cream, but it didn’t open untill 10, so I was a bit too early….though I think ice cream would be a reasonable breakfast out here.
Saw 3 deer and 6 turkeys before 10 am. The deer I came up on one by one which was fun. In total, I saw 6 deer today. Probably the biggest wildlife day yet, at least for the bigger game.
Terrain was up and down all day, but nothing too strenuous. The shin splint issues in one leg that I started having the day before the hurricane are still present, and today it hurt a bit more. I took 3 breaks to soak the leg in cold stream water and that helped a bit. Still took Ibuprofin. Because of the early start I was able to take fairly long breaks during the day and still get in around 5pm.
Lots of wet spots along the trail and one area that was supposedly closed. There was no alternative route offered so I went in. It was a 5 mile section that had a section that was kinda raging water, but nothing worse than the fording in Maine.
Staying at the Graymoor shelter which is on the property of a monastery (Franscisan). There is electricity and a cold shower. Hammocking inside tonight. Just Blairfoot and I here tonight.
