The temperatures really dropped overnight and it ended up being quite cool and perfect for sleeping. We had decided to stick with our usual start time even though it was going to be a short day. We are usually all awake before our alarms anyways, and it always feels good to get into town early.
The walking today was really easy…just following logging roads at a gentle descent. Even though we were walking at a pretty slow pace, we still make good time. We only took one break and Mace said it was better for his feet if he just didn’t stop moving.
We got into Coleman around 9am and walked through about a mile of residential area before finding a diner for breakfast. The town seems really cute and has a lot of history which it tries to promote through a multitude of informational plaques.
Our breakfast at Chris’ Restaurant was fantastic! We all ate a bunch and the hot breakfast tasted so good after five days of not cooking.
Our general impression of the town is quite friendly as we had multiple people come up to us and ask if we were hiking the GDT and wish us luck on the hike.
We arrived at our motel pretty early and our rooms were still being cleaned. But we only had to wait a half hour (we used that time to go across the street and pick up our resupply package) before we could get into our rooms. The motel owner was so nice and we really appreciated that she was so accommodating to us.
We felt a few raindrops as we were walking to the motel this morning, but the skies really opened up with heavy rain and hail after we had been in our rooms for an hour or so. Boy were we happy to be inside and dry when the downpour came!
