Tough start to the day as I was feeling a bit poor. Sour stomach and energy-less. Got rolling around 6:15, and headed out of camp as soon as I had my gear packed up. Started feeling better a bit before noon.
A little after noon, I came across a sign saying that there was trail magic at a nearby trailhead. When I got down to the trailhead, I was amazed to see about 20 hikers there. I set down my pack, and a woman hands me a plate of fruit…..watermelon, cantelope, a nectarine…and then a cold coke. I sat down in some shade and when I am about 2/3rds finished with my fruitplate, I am then handed another plate, with a burger and baked beans and potato salad. What an oasis. I think the trail magicians are trying to outdo each other! Such wonderful hospitality. Thanks so much!
We left the magic after everyone else and got a fairly late start (3:30) on the remaining 13 miles that we wanted to do. The walking was quite good and we were able to get the miles in before 8. Walked and talked quite a bit with Freebird, who had hiked the AT in 09.
Great weather again today, temps probably in the mid 70s…blue skies..
Mosquitoes held off till the evening…but then came out with gusto, as is seeming to be the norm.
With us camping at lower and lower elevations, I am now considering having my hammock sent out. There seems to be plenty of trees, and I don’t expect to be sleeping in freezing temps much beyond the Sierras.
