Sep 6 – Dark, Rainy, Slippery, and Flooded

September 6, 2011 by Beardoh

Dark waking up today. The rain was heavy last night. The kind of heavy that pushes all the leaves, pine needles and small branches that are on the ground to new locations. We stayed dry under our hammcok tarps. All the flat well worn tent spots were flowing with water.

Got a fairly early start to the day. The small brook that was yesterday had become raging with the heavy rain last night. That was a good first glimpse of what the day had in store.

Arrived at the road to Greenville after an hour or so and got a hitch into town. Had breakfast at a little three table joint that served really big omelettes. Very much enjoyed that. Picked up some athletic tape for Beardos shins and then over to the post office for our maildrop. This drop had been sitting there for over three weeks. The post office will hold for 30 days. While at the post office, a guy came to send some letters and struck up conversation with us and gave us a ride back to the trailhead.

The hiking was largely over ledge that was pretty slippery. It was frustrating as it seems that the trail was made over the easy to build, but most difficult to walk areas. What wasn’t on the slippery ledge was on trail that was washed out. Much of it was over five inches deep. A very wet day for us, as it rained all day and we walked in water for much of the day.

Had to take a large reroute, and on the way ran into a couple section hikers. They gave us some Luna bars and a ride to where the AT started up again. Thanks!

The last two miles were quite kind, with good trail on the way to the campsite. Shelter was a welcome sight to get inside and get in dry clothes as we cooked and wrote this. Looking forward to the warmth of the hammocks tonight.

Shins on Beardo were ok today, but not much better. Sweet Peas hip was ok today. Still taking a pretty easy pace.

We crossed the NY/NJ state line. Into our 7th state.
