Even though the rain had stopped by 6pm yesterday and it didn’t rain overnight, our tarps were still wet in the morning. It was a really nice temperature out this morning and we could see that the skies were clear.
The cool temperatures and a frequent breeze made for a great day of hiking. After the really hot days of last week, we enjoyed the mild day and the easy miles.
We ran into another CDT hiker today, Checkerboard Red, who is doing a flip-flop. He started at the Mexico border in May and hiked all of New Mexico before heading up to northern Montana to hike back south. He seemed to be having an eventful hike (which included a grizzly bear encounter), but he seemed in high spirits.
We had one solid climb this morning, and then the rest was either downhill or flat. We made our way out of the mountains and down towards I-15, which we had crossed last week as well.
We had several miles of dirt road and several miles of paved roads, while we crossed under the interstate and headed back into the mountains.
Shortly before getting to camp, we came upon our first trail magic of the trip. There was a cooler near a gate on a dirt road which had some cold sodas. It was a nice treat at the end of the day. Our luck continued as we found a place to camp with almost all live trees…a nice flat spot for Mace’s tent and practically hammock heaven for us.
