It took awhile to warm up in our sleeping bags last night. It takes SweetPea hours to warm up her feet once they are cold. We were in our hammocks last night by 6:45pm, so we were able to get a long night of sleep.
It rained a bit overnight, but had stopped by the time we got up this morning. We are always hopeful when we get up that as the daylight comes it, we will be greeted by blue skies. It is always a guessing game for the first hour or so.
The morning started out with a gentle climb up to a snow mesa. There wasn’t any snow up there, but it was a giant, pretty flat expanse of land that falls away quickly on the edges. The walking was pretty mild today and we were blessed with some actual blue skies and actual sun. Yeah!
We took several breaks, but as usual the pull of town had us doing the miles a bit quicker than normal. We saw several CT hikers going northbound but we didn’t really stop and chat.
At the edge of the snow mesa, the trail headed down quickly into a rocky area. As we stood at the edge, we could see multiple pikas scurrying around the rocks. As we walked down the trail, we could hear them squeaking from all directions. There were so many pikas in the area…probably the most we have ever seen in one spot. They are so cute and they always make us smile.
We got down to the road by 11:15am and were lucky to only wait ten minutes before getting a hitch into town. We were so excited because, we had waited about an hour and a half for a hitch in the same spot three years ago when hiking the CT.
We were dropped off at a cafe where we ate a delicious lunch. Then we managed to get two of the last rooms at the nearby motel. So, we feel like the planets have aligned today for a great day.
