CDT Day 26 – Copper Mountain

July 13, 2020 by SweetPea

Date: 7/13/20

Daily Miles: 9

Total Miles: 438

Last night we had a storm blow through before we were asleep. None of us had our tarps up, so as soon as we felt the rain drops we all quickly put our tarps up. The wind really picked up and we got a good bit of rain. It didn’t last too long, but the strong winds were a bit disconcerting.

Shortly after getting on the trail this morning, we saw a two new blow downs in the trail, which must have happened last night with the strong wind. It definitely made us glad that our campsite weathered the storm well.

The morning started out with a nice climb up to our one pass for the day. We saw multiple marmots in the rocks as we got above tree line. The trail continues to be pretty great on this alternate.

After getting over the pass, we descended down to Lost Lake where we took a break. It was a very picturesque alpine lake tucked in the trees and rocks.

It was actually pretty cool this morning with grey rain clouds hanging around. It did rain enough for us to put on our ponchos at one point, but then stopped soon after.

As we got closer to Copper Mountain, we started to see the day hikers. We really got spoiled in Montana, where we always had the trail to ourselves. We were still able to make good time down to the Copper Mountain ski resort. We made it to the bus stand about 30 seconds before the bus came to take us to Frisco. We breathed a big sigh of relief for making the bus, as it comes just once an hour.

We are now killing time outside the Safeway until our AirBnB is available for us to check in. We are going to be taking tomorrow off as well, which we are all looking forward to. We look forward to seeing our friends from Denver area , Brian and Pam, as they are making the trip up to get a meal and hang out with us.
