Oct 16 – Buchananon and Super Trail Magic

October 16, 2011 by Beardoh

Early start and walked by headlamp for about 20 minutes. The mornings are pretty excellent when we have clear skies and we go from moon or starlight to sunlight.

Great weather again today. Warm with some breeze. 70s during the warmer part of the day.

Saw Right Click, another Southbounder that we have been around since NJ….the only other Southbounder today that we saw.

Shortly after seeing Right Click, we ran into our best trail angel experience to date. We needed to get into Buchannon for food, and were concerned about the 5 mile hitch in and out of town. When we were about 2 miles before the road to Buchannon, two ladies were passing in the other direction and we talked with them shortly mentioning that we were headed into Buchannon. One asked if we wanted to take her car! We just about flipped at the offer. I guess we don’t look like houligans after all. At any rate, the vehicle was great…a newish Volvo wagon that drove like a dream. If you are reading this Song In My Soul, or Gran, thanks a million!

Buchannon was strange. The town had an incredibly bad grocery store. Expired food…hardly anything on the shelves…they didn’t even have tortillas. Everything way over priced. Definitely should be pulled from the guidebook. Burger King was interesting. We parked in a way where we were facing the folks filling their gas tanks, and a drunk lady and her man came driving up. She was pretty tanked and all over the place, good entertainment. They started driving away with their food on their car.

We got news that our buddy Mace is back on the trail….he must have gotten things with his back sorted out by the chiropractor. We are pretty thrilled and expect that he will catch up to us this week.

We did more miles than planned this afternoon even though we were feeling lethargic after filling up on Burger King. Glad we did as the shelter we are at is excellent. It’s up on a ridge of deciduous trees with easy hammock hangs. Set up hammocks in the dark, cowboy style and have clear skies so we can look at the stars as we go to sleep. Hung bear bag for the first time in a while as we read in the shelter log that someone got their bag stolen by a bear when they went to the privy.

Just noticing that this is probably the first night since NJ that we have been the only ones at a shelter.

Daily Distance: 20.7
Trip Distance: 1,448.5
