The 4th was a day filled with great variety for weather. The morning started out calm and beautiful with some light fog setting over the lake where we were camped. We climbed up Moxie Bald Mtn and sat for a while soaking up the sunshine.
As we neared the top of Pleasant Mtn, things changed for the unpleasant. Temps dropped by 15 degrees very quickly and we could hear thunder. It started pouring and we huddled under some pines just below the exposed area on the top. It rained really really heavy for about 20 minutes. Flash flood heavy with hail.
The rain changed the trail dramatically. What had been nice and dry path became a river in most areas. The photo shows an example of this.
After the lightning and thunder stopped, we continued on and made it down to the road outside of Caratunk, Maine. On the way down the mountain, Sweetpea slipped in a water crossing and the lower half of her pack got soaked. Thankfully the trash compactor bags that we line our packs with worked great and all stayed dried.
Caught a lift in in the back of a pickup, and Beardoh got a beer at Northern Outdoors lodge. Slept in one of their tent cabins.
Not many hikers to be seen on the trail today.
