Jul 3 – Bald Mountain Pond

July 3, 2011 by Beardoh

Took a zero day (no hiking miles) in Monson yesterday. It was rejuvinating. Had some BBQ, left over pizza and sorted out some supplies for the next section.

Today we started out reasonably early and got a solid 18 mile in. The trail was mellow and there were no substantial climbs. Beavers have moved in to areas close to the trail and dammed up some of the small creeks significantly. Because of this, the trail has been re routed in a few sections. Several people out fishing in the streams we passed today.

Got into the shelter early today and relaxed with some other hikers by the fire. It is a nice sitting down by the pond. We have our hammocks setup within 20 yards of the water. We hope that many of the places we camp at continue to be like this.

One of the hikers here did the Florida Scenic Trail before the AT and had done the PCT last year. He is a northbounder with just the last 130 miles to go. When he finishes, he will have walked more than 6000 miles in the last 12 months. His diet for the trail is interesting. It is largely flour tortillas with peanut butter, hersheys chocolate, honey, spaghettios, POP tarts and frosting. He cooks nothing.

Here a rundown of our diet.

Breakfast- home prepared breakfast bars and home prepared granola with Carnation instant breakfast. On occasion, instant oatmeal.

Snacks/lunch- Bear Valley meal bars, home prepared granaola bars, Snickers bars.

Dinners- home prepared dehydrated meals. We have 7 different meals ranging from corn pasta with spaghetti sauce to turkey chili to dahl.

So far we have been very satisfied with our food plan. Will note if that changes over the walk.

Daily Distance: 18
Trip Distance: 133.2
