Great day. I think it was one of our favorites of the trail.
We slept in, and many of the other campers at Bright Angel campsites were already gone. We chilled out, had our breakfast and headed out a little before 8. We rolled up on Phantom Ranch right around 8am and wanted to get a hot drink. Beardoh chatted with a couple guys that were from NH. It was a father and son, and the father was 94. He has come down into the Canyon 42 times. Incredible. They asked if we needed any food and gave us a grocery bag full of fruit, snacks and nuts. What luck!
Walking through the Canyon was pretty awesome. It is one of the most spectacular things to walk through. The colors of the massive stone walls with river through is really quite a site. The trail building continued to impress us. A hearty effort truly went into making a solid trail along the canyon walls.
For lunch, we took a long break at Ribbon Falls. The falls are unique in that there is a tall moss growth that the water flows down over. We all got in the water in front of the falls and got some photos.
Tonight we are camped at Cottonwood Camp. This camp area had about 12 sites and they are full. It is more spread out than Bright Angel and we have nice views of one of the canyon walls across the river. Surprisingly there is potable water and bathrooms here as well. We arrived at the site around 2 and many of the sites were already taken. Around 5, we saw a thermometer that was in the shade that read 90 degrees. Pretty warm down here.
Mr Furious just rolled in around 8pm as we write this and he’ll join us walking up the North Rim tomorrow.
