Slept through our alarms this morning and woke up around 5:45. It was already light outside.
Last night was another cold night. Luckily the wind died down before we went to bed, which helped us all sleep good. Once we were up and out of our sleeping bags, we instantly felt really cold. Our water froze again last night, so we know it was freezing!
Since we only had a few miles into town, we each only ate a snack and then we headed down the trail. When the mornings are so cold, we all start the day with our hiking poles attached to our packs. That way we can walk with our hands in the pockets of our down jackets. We usually hike this way for at least the first two hours as we try to warm up.
We got into Flagstaff and walked to a breakfast place on Route 66. The restaurant (MartAnnes) was really good and we stuffed ourselves. After breakfast, we milled around the downtown area until an outfitter store opened so SweetPea could buy a pair of socks.
Even though we couldn’t check into our hostel rooms before 1:00, we went to the hostel and just hung out in their communal area and checked emails.
We have enjoyed our time in Flagstaff so far and are looking forward to another day of rest here.
