AZT 27 – Coyotes and Elk

April 3, 2015 by Beardoh

Daily Miles: 24
Total Miles: 533
Camp Elevation: 7500 ft

We all seemed to be awake before our alarms went off at 5:30, so we got up quickly and were on the trail just after 6:00. It is getting lighter earlier which helps with the quick packing up… We just seem to be quicker when we can see what we’re doing without a headlamp.

Early in the morning, we came upon a big group of elk. They are definitely skittish and run off before we can get too close. We even saw three coyote cross the forest road we were on. We were excited to see some wildlife.

The trail continued to be fairly flat today as we continue to cross the plateau. The trail was rocky at times, but we were able to make miles quickly.

The wind was fairly strong all day. We wore our down jackets or wind shirts most of the day. If we stopped for a break, we would bundle up in order to stay warm.

We passed multiple stock tanks again for our water sources, but we were looking forward to a spring which was about halfway through our day. The water looked clearer than the tanks, but turned out to taste terrible. Luckily, Qball eyed a small seep later in the afternoon which wasn’t on the map. Turned out to be the best water of the day.

We stopped around 5:15 and made Camp. We had a relaxing evening just hanging out. We all still wish we had more food to eat. We are dreaming of the good we’ll eat at Mormon Lake Lodge tomorrow. We’ll probably get there once the store opens up for some snacks and then get a meal at the cafe when it opens.

Looks like a full moon tonight and based on the position of our hammocks, it will probably shine right at us all night.
