Arizona Trail (AZT) – Gear List

March 6, 2015 by Beardoh

Even though we have been on several long distance hikes, we still use a gear list to make sure that we do not forget anything back at home. The list has evolved over time and probably will continue to do so as we make changes to gear, and change with seasons and technology.  We’ve put together a downloadable gear list at our site longtrailvermont.com, which helps folks plan for the Long Trail.  Here is a link to the page with a Gear List you can use.

AZT Gear List

While we enjoy sleeping in our hammocks as much as we can (they are our favorite pieces of gear), we know that the Arizona Trail will lack locations to hang in trees.  In addition, because of the anticipated cool temps, hammocking could be quite cold at this time of the year.  With that in mind, we are planning to sleep on the ground under our tarp.  Our Arizona Trail Gear List is definitely a 3 season setup with sleeping bags that will take us into the low 20s…which for us, adds some weight with a Silk Sack (SweetPea) & thermal underwear (Beardoh!), which wouldn’t be there in a summer setup.

We do share some of our gear; we don’t carry 2 sets of first aid odd’s and ends, we carry just one shelter, etc… So, if you look at the gear lists closely, they are somewhat complimentary.

XPAK is a type of material that we use to make our packs. It works well for non abrasive areas on the pack.

What do you use for your kitchen?

For the trip on the AZT in 2015, a spoon (for each) was our only kitchen item. We have hiked several thousand miles without cooking and been happy eating cold food. However, this past summer (2016), we thru hiked the PCT and grabbed a stove and pot for the last 500 miles as temps got cooler. The system we used was a Caldera Cone, with a Titanium pot, and an alcohol stove. Light and efficient. Thanks for reading!

Do these weights include food and water weight? Because they seem so low!

What type of shoe do you recommend? Trailrunners or boots?

Hi Carmen – we both have used train runners for a decade of long distance hiking. They allow our feet to breathe, are comfortable and do not have a break in period.
