Got rolling earlier than planned. Woke needing to go to the bathroom and was awake enough so I packed up and was out by 6:30. Ran into Jaybird and walked/talked with him for sometime. He also hiked the AT last year. We had a good conversation about thru hiking trails like the ones we have done vs doing the big trails in pieces. Lots to ponder on the subject. When thru hiking, one definitely feels the push to do miles everyday. That can be good and bad.
We crossed the Suiattle River on the new bridge that was just completed. The bridge is beautiful, using 24″ steel I beams for support, it was meant to be quite permanent. Hopefully a giant tree doesn’t come down the river during flooding and take it out.
Saw Blairswitch,Trailbait, Blue Sunshine, Guardian Angel, Biggie, 4 forest service workers and 2 backpackers out on a 44 mile loop. Saw everyone before 11 this am, and then didn’t see anyone but the guys I hike with for the rest of the day.
Had a long climb in the morning but then just gradual downhill for the remainder of the day. Good views in the middle of the when we were out in exposed areas.
Could see smoke from a wild fire billowing over the nearest mountain next us hopefully it will get contained quickly, as it is close enough to effect the PCT if the wind starts blowing this way..Jaybird saw flames in the late evening coming over the top of the mountain.
Just the four of us camped together tonight.
Tomorrow into Stehekin, one of the most notable towns along the PCT, for our final resupply…people in the guidebook seem to really love the town, Looking forward to it.
