The day started on a great note as we met some section hikers at the complimentary breakfast at the motel. One gave us a ride back to the trailhead.
Terrain at the beginning of the day was fairly steep, but it leveled off to a ridge which we pretty much stayed on for the whole day. Trail still had some of the Pennsylvania rocks, but in general was reasonably easy. We went a little further than planned as we were both feeling quite good today and ended up hiking our highest mileage day yet….and with a fresh resupply of food.
Lots of deer on the trail today, some as close as 40 yards.
Day was mostly drizzle with low visibility….rain on and off. Temps were quite pleasant for being wet.
We arrived at the shelter around 6:30 and promptly ordered a pizza…what a treat to order it right from the shelter. This shelter is close to a road, making it possible. This shelter, named for the road which it is near (PA 501) is an exceptional shelter. It has a bunch of bunks with a picnic table inside, a solar shower….which wasn’t too warm since we didnt get any sun for the last few days. We are able to set up our hammocks inside which is a nice bonus. Also, were happy to see a couple of other southbound thru-hikers, Splake and Sponge…who we had met a couple weeks ago in New Jersey.
