Woohoo! Today we hit the 1000 miles mark! Lots of walking still left, but this is a milestone.
Day started off foggy and misty again. Visibility was just a lob wedge distance for the first several hours of hiking.
Saw quite a bit of wildlife today, including several deer, a black racer snake (we think), many grouse and 3 turtles. The black snake and the turtles were right on the trail in front of us.
Lots of poison ivy on the trail today. A very long section where it was on both sides of the trail and crawling up most trees that were on the trail. Some of the free standing plants were over 4 feet tall and the vines going up the trees were over 20′ in some sections. We were glad we had our pants…thanks Qball for the warning! There were a lot of blow downs still unattended, and the poison ivy was difficult to avoid.
Not many hikers on the trail today. Saw a northbounder with his dog that was hiking to Vermont for the winter, and two other northbounders that we didn’t get a chance to talk with.
In the latter part of the afternoon, Sweet Pea fell and hurt her thumb. Hopefully it will heal up good enough by the am.
Tonight we are staying at a campsite away from a shelter. The shelter that is somewhat close apparently has a rule against fires. We wanted to have a fire since we were about ready to stop around 4pm, and we’d have the time to dry out our shoes, which have been wet for the past couple days. Sky is looking clear this evening (right now), so we are hopeful that tomorrow we will see sun.
